Beginner's Take: Confirming Breakouts with Volume - A Simple Checklist

Hey folks, diving deeper into TA and really focusing on breakout confirmation. I've noticed a lot of beginners (myself included not too long ago!) get burned by fakeouts, especially on coins with lower liquidity. A classic scenario is seeing a price jump but then it fizzles out because there wasn't enough conviction behind the move.

So, I've put together a simple checklist I use to try and confirm if a breakout is legit, focusing on volume. It's not foolproof, but it's definitely improved my win rate:

  • Volume Spike on Breakout: Does the volume significantly increase *as* the price breaks through a key resistance level? I'm looking for a candle with volume much higher than the preceding 10-20 candles. Think 2x, 3x, or even more.
  • Volume on Retest: If the price pulls back to retest the broken resistance (now support), does the volume decrease on that pullback? This indicates that buyers are stepping in at the new support level and sellers aren't aggressively pushing back.
  • Follow-Through Volume: After the retest holds, does the volume pick up again as the price starts moving higher? This shows renewed buying pressure and confirms the trend is likely to continue.

I usually check this on the 1-hour or 4-hour charts for most altcoins. It’s a bit more challenging with super low-cap coins where volume can be erratic, but for mid-caps and large caps, this has been a solid indicator. Anyone else use a similar volume checklist, or have other methods to confirm breakouts reliably? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Solid approach! Focusing on volume is absolutely key for confirming breakouts, especially in the crypto space where volatility can be a real beast. I've found that not only the amount of volume but also the trend of volume during the breakout is crucial.

For instance, are we seeing volume consistently increase as price pushes through resistance, or does it spike then immediately die down? The latter is often a big red flag for a fakeout. What coins have you been observing this on most recently?
