Anyone else finding it hard to keep up with all the new L2 solutions?

Seriously, it feels like every week there's a new Layer 2 scaling solution popping up for Ethereum. We've got Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, StarkNet, Polygon zkEVM... the list goes on. It's awesome to see the innovation happening to tackle EIP-1559 and high gas fees, but keeping track of which one is best for what, or even just understanding the core differences, is becoming a full-time job!

I'm trying to figure out the best L2 to use for my DeFi activities. I've dabbled with Arbitrum and Optimism for some yield farming, and the lower transaction costs are a game-changer compared to mainnet. But then I hear about the 'rollup wars' and the potential for different L2s to become dominant.

Does anyone have a go-to L2 they prefer and why? Are you focusing on:

  • Security: Sticking with the more established Optimistic Rollups?
  • Speed & Cost: Diving into the newer ZK-Rollups like zkSync or StarkNet?
  • Ecosystem: Choosing based on the dApps already available on that L2?
  • Interoperability: Waiting for bridges to mature between different L2s?

I'm particularly interested in the long-term viability of each. Are some of these just going to fade away, or will we see a few major L2s emerge as the clear winners? Any insights or resources you've found helpful in navigating this complex landscape would be greatly appreciated. Trying to avoid getting rug-pulled by choosing the wrong scaling solution!

You're not alone, for sure! It's a wild west out there with L2s right now. I've been focusing on the main distinction between Optimistic Rollups (like Arbitrum & Optimism) and ZK-Rollups (zkSync, StarkNet, Polygon zkEVM). Optimistic are generally faster to withdraw from, but ZK-Rollups offer stronger security guarantees and potentially lower fees in the long run once they mature. For DeFi, I've found Arbitrum and Optimism to be pretty user-friendly so far. Have you noticed any significant differences in transaction speed or cost between the two you've used?
